This week is home week. I’m going to send out 2 additional newsletters about the cooking and gardening I did at the little blue house and what I hope for the future in my family’s new home.
Letting go is not always an easy process.
Here is a list of all the reasons we loved our little blue house — which we customized in so many ways and loved — to help remember almost 15 years in a home.
Because all of the dreams we had for our children and their early years were there
Because I dreamed about coming back to it and the garden while we were in a small apartment during the first few months of covid
Because it was a home base, and wherever I was in the world I thought of it as home
Because we put everything we had into it to buy it
Because it was built in the 1920s had character
Because of the front room and its coziness; the fireplace with rain tapping on the chimney crown during the long grey winters and the sun streaming in through the windows, the shadows of leaves dancing on the coffee table on spring and summer mornings
Because of the deck and so many summer evenings looking up at the sky, teaching the kids about constellations and planets, satellites and stars
Because of birthday parties in the backyard
Because of the kitchen, picking out the custom tiles and laying them out late one night to check for imperfections. Designing everything myself from scratch, hiring sub-contractors and when it was all done the happiness we felt cooking
Because it felt safe
Because we loved walking around the neighborhood
Because it was near a bike trail, and one of our happiest pastimes involved packing the kids into a Burley (later their own bikes) and then pumping air into all our tires for a 2 hour outing
Because even though it was only made of wood and plaster it felt like it could last forever.
Do you know someone else moving on from a beloved apartment, home, city, country?

Hy Lorraine! My heart is full learning how special the house became to you and your family. One of my most precious memories was visiting your family, being served peach cake while playing a board game, our kids playing together, and Theo getting to see where he was born. We *loved" what you did with the place and the beautiful plantings and blooms from your gardening. Let me know the best way to stay in touch and I'd love to visit you all in San Francisco!
May you carry beautiful memories of your Little Blue House with you always and make equally wonderful ones in your new home, Lorraine.
