Good Music and a Book for Cooking Fans
My favorite band of the moment and a fictional cooking goddess
Oh Sunny Day!
A shoutout to the sun, which was a huge contributor to my happy mood yesterday and contributed mightily to the above photo. Zane is currently very into collecting these kinds of erasers, which come apart into cute little pieces that you can then reassemble.
Music: ⚡Odezsa ⚡
Not since Zedd have I replayed an electronic album as much as I’ve played A Moment Apart and The Last Goodbye by Odezsa. On repeat are Higher Ground featuring Naomi Wild, Equal featuring Lapsley, and of course the amazing synth sounds on The Last Goodbye using the vocals of Bettye LaVette.
The algorithms are out there suggesting more to me, but if you love Odesza too I’d like to hear what else you’re listening to!
Book: Lessons in Chemistry
My Dad was a chemical engineer, and from a young age he would talk to my sister and I about the big vats of vaccines he was “cooking up” in large scale production at the Merck plant in Rahway, NJ. My sister and I were given lots of different flasks, pipettes and test tubes to move colored water around while pretending to make all kinds of magical potions.
I also usually have a pretty good time cooking, so when I read some reviews of Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, I thought to myself, this is it!
Here are the things I loved:
The talking to her dog - which I completely understand! I don’t think Maven understand my words but she *definitely* understands my moods.
I also hold my hair up with a pencil or paintbrush sometimes. Great idea.
Just getting things done with cooking up a storm; it’s needed and she makes sure to show that she’s not compromising and will make the best version of a meal that she can
The beautiful way in which she can’t believe that a “smart” woman like herself is having such a hard time raising a baby.
I know it’s not good to pigeonhole women into the cooking goddess mold. Hoever, I’ve come to the point where I almost wonder if women are being told to not cook as a profit motive by corporations. Cooking for those you love is such a tactile and tangible way of showing your love and it’s one of our 3 basic needs as humans.
Elizabeth is an amazing cook but doesn’t seem to try hard at it; simply gifted (suspension of belief here) because of her knowledge of chemistry? She doesn’t make any mistakes, which is bit off to me. We all have cooking failures, and it would’ve made her feel more real/relatable to me.
Well, that’s it for this week. I’m going to take a break in the sun again before getting to work!
