We went away last weekend, and before we left I gently mentioned that I would like two books for my birthday: Eat a Peach by David Chang and The Wok by Kenji Lopez-Alt.
While sitting in warm sunshine with Canada right across Semiahmoo Bay, I slowly digested David Chang’s story about growing up and his ups and downs with family, religion, being a golf prodigy, falling away from being a golf prodigy, and struggles with his Korean identity. I learned that the proper way to address a female Supreme Court Justice is “Madam Justice”. That luck is a hell of a good thing to have. Parmesan has naturally-occurring MSG. Depression and anger can go hand-in-hand; the intimidating figure yelling was secretly suffering. My feelings about David Chang’s personality wavered back and forth close to the way he described his switching between manic and depressive episodes. I’m not sure I really like David Chang after reading his memoir, but I respect his tenacity, passion for good food, and recognition of his flaws. I admire that he’s moved on to having many women managing in his food empire to offset his pre-family chef bro lifestyle.
Soundtrack to this was a discovery of the Lofi Girl Youtube channel. It’s pretty much the perfect study music and feels warmer than ambient/flow state stations I’ve found on Spotify. I know publicity about it has been around the block but hey I just found out about it and I’m enjoying it now.
